Nintendo Switch sales surpass 3DS predecessor

February 5, 2021 – Nintendo has sold nearly 80 million units of its Switch hybrid handheld/home video game system, eclipsing those of its predecessor, the 3DS.

Nintendo’s hugely successful games console, the Nintendo Switch, has sold 79.9 million units, according to the Japanese firm’s latest financial statements.

The news is all the more startling given the Switch has been on sale for less than four years, whereas the 3DS went on sale 10 years ago, only being discontinued in September 2020.

Nintendo posted record profits of $3.6 billion for the period April to December 2020, buoyed by 30 million sales of its gentle social game, Animal Crossing, which is proving hugely popular during Covid-19 lockdowns around the world.
